Samsung Galaxy S10 +, will this be the best Samsung ever?

Samsung Galaxy S10 +, will this be the best Samsung ever?

A new design, new cameras and an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. A new, more powerful and more intelligent SoC. These are some of the attributes of the new Samsung Galaxy S10 +. Is this the best Samsung ever?

Get to know the Galaxy S10 + in detail through yet another comprehensive review.

The Samsung Galaxy S10 (and its entire family) has opened the door to a new generation of top-of-the-line smartphones, where Artificial Intelligence (AI), photography, security and storage capacity remain the core. Attributes raised to a higher level, compared to the previous generation of smartphones.

The “Plus” version of the Galaxy S10 was the one we've been testing from the day of its release and it's time to tell you everything about this smartphone.

General specifications of the Samsung Galaxy S10 +

The Samsung Galaxy S10 + is on the market as the solution with greater storage capacity ever seen on a smartphone. 1 TB (Terabyte) is how much a user can have, without resorting to memory cards, with this new smartphone. In addition to this stupendous capacity, there are two other models available, 512 GB and 128 GB. However, they all still have the possibility of expanding storage through microSD card up to 512 GB. The 1 TB model comes equipped with 12 GB RAM and the others with 8 GB.

The processor that equips the S10 + is the same that equips the other models of the same line. This is new Exynos 9820, an octa-core SoC and 8nm (2 × 2.73 GHz Mongoose M4 & 2 × 2.31 GHz Cortex-A75 & 4 × 1.95 GHz Cortex-A55). On the other hand, the GPU team is the Mali-G76 MP12.

It is important to note that there are versions equipped with Snapdragon 855 (7 nm) but are not available for our market, as is more commonly the case.

The screen, which also receives news, is now called “Infinity-O”. This name comes after the option of placing the built-in cameras on the screen. This one screen is Dynamic AMOLED 6.4 “with resolution QuadHD + (1440 x 3040 pixels) and has a ratio of 19: 9 and a density of dots per inch of about 522.

The cameras also appear to be renewed. O Samsung Galaxy S10 + therefore arrives with 5 cameras, each with its own specifications and purpose. In the rear there are 3 rooms and two in front.

Rear Cameras:
  • 12 MP with variable aperture (f / 1.5-2.4) – wide-angle 26 mm (Dual Pixel PDAF, OIS)
  • 12 MP with f / 2.4 aperture – 52mm telephoto (AF, OIS, 2x optical zoom)
  • 16 MP with f / 2.2 aperture – 12mm ultra wide-angle
  • Video: 2160p @ 60fps, 1080p @ 240fps, 720p @ 960fps, HDR
Front Cameras:
  • 10 MP with aperture f / 1.9 – wide angle 26mm (Dual Pixel PDAF)
  • 8 MP with aperture f / 2.2 – wide angle 22mm (depth sensor)
  • Video: 2160p @ 30fps, 1080p @ 30fps

Samsung continues to offer 3.5mm audio jack, but in the matter of sound there is more to refer. It comes with two loudspeakers, which reproduce sound in stereo and, in addition, still offers Dolby Atmos technology with AKG sound. The two microphones that it offers capture extreme sound quality and the very sound reproduction, I venture to say, which is the best currently on a smartphone.

Additionally, it comes with Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac / ax, Bluetooth 5.0, USB type-C 3.1 and also features FM radio. From the array of sensors, the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor accelerometer, gyroscope, proximity and brightness sensors, compass, barometer, SpO2.

THE battery is 4100 mAh with fast and wireless charging technology, both at 15W. The great novelty of this battery is the Wireless PowerShare which allows you to load other devices that also support wireless charging.

In the box (more environmentally friendly)

Samsung, earlier this year, announced which would be preparing greener boxes with less plastic. The plastic has not been totally eliminated, however, it has been greatly reduced and the packaging itself is now more compact.

The content itself has not changed from previous models. Comes with:

  • Samsung Galaxy S10 +
  • Quick Start Guide
  • Clip to open card slot
  • Power Adapter
  • USB / USB-C Cable
  • Wired Headphones (3.5mm Jack)
  • USB adapter for data transfer

Construction and Design

The Samsung Galaxy S10 + is available in glass and ceramic, as back cover materials. Ceramic models are 512 GB and 1 TB. Given that the model under analysis is 128 GB, we have the model in glass, with protection Gorilla Glass 5. The front glass, curved at the ends, has Gorilla Glass 6. The remaining structure is in aluminum.

Samsung Galaxy S10e (Black Prism), Samsung Galaxy S10 (White Prism) and Samsung Galaxy S10 + (Green Prism)

Samsung has created “prism” colors that give the smartphone an even more stylish finish. In the case of the model under analysis we use the green prism, but there is also the black and white prism. The metal side has a greenish finish to give continuity to the color of the rear.

Looking at the smartphone, the features of Samsung are easily detected, but improved … Okay, just in some aspects.

On the left, on the side, there is the volume button and Bixby. In turn, there is the audio jack, the USB-type C port, the microphone and the speaker. On top, another microphone and card slot (2x nanoSIM or nanoSIM + microSD). Lastly, to the right, the badly positioned Power button (watch the video to better understand what it is).

At the rear, the fingerprint sensor disappeared (which has now passed to the screen) and the cameras are positioned horizontally, in a module that also has the LED flashes and the various sensors (already typical). Below this module comes the inscription of the brand and nothing else is to disturb the beauty of this rear.

At the front comes the screen, which is occupying about 88.9% of the front panel. With very reduced margins all around and with a curved finish. At the top there is the loudspeaker and, already inside the screen, the two front chambers. At its left side, the sensors of luminosity and proximity, imperceptible to the naked eye, are positioned.

Also on the screen, also imperceptible is the fingerprint sensor, already near the bottom.

The Infinity-O … the “notch” screen, but in disguise

Samsung innovated. The concept of “infinity-o” is not exclusive to the Galaxy S line, but a top-of-the-range Samsung is not surprising. The brand has always moved away from the concept “Notch” and now has something very similar. Or perhaps even worse … The cameras appear placed in a corner of the screen, inlaid form, where the image around them appears.

Consequently, the cut ends up being the a lot of creativity at the level of Wallpapers. Samsung might have had these cool ideas, but just created wallpapers with the upper right corner a little darker to try to disguise the zone of the chambers.

Apart from this “detail”, the Dynamic AMOLED screen is absolutely fantastic. It has a perfect adaptation to the variations of luminosity, presents an excellent reproduction of colors, an incredible contrast … nothing negative to point out, unless there is a “hole” when you are watching movies or photos in full screen.

For those who are less sensitive in their use, margins can be a problem., with unwanted touches at the edges of the screen.

Ultrasonic fingerprint sensor

What is an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor?

One of these sensors consists, in short, of a transmitter and receiver which will create a three-dimensional ultrasound image of the fingerprint. This will allow you to acquire much more information than in classic sensors.

This is a more secure system as it is not limited to information on the first layer of skin. The 3D nature of this capture technique makes it an even safer alternative to capacitive sensors.

Learn more about Biometric Sensors on here.

In the case of S10 +, Ultrasonic fingerprint sensor is not visible, but is easily decorable and works perfectly. It should be noted that the sensor unlocks the smartphone with the display off. If the user needs help to know where the sensor is located, double-tap the screen off. Then the screen wakes up and the exact location of the finger is indicated.

It should be noted that the Galaxy S10 + also has the facial recognition as a way of unlocking. However, this not a safe method and Samsung warns well for that fact. Watch the following video:

Samsung One UI Interface

One UI is Samsung's new user interface, based on Android Pie. Visually, a change of the application icons and the system itself is noticeable. Everything is even cleaner, responding to the current minimalist trend.

Besides the image, this new interface is more optimized, more fluid and … according to Samsung, smarter. Learning from user habits and adapting resources. There is no doubt that One UI is a “breath of fresh air” to Samsung smartphones.

Bixby, the virtual assistant, is still present. I would say, even more present. Bixby Home itself (the menu to the left of the home screen) is more complete. In this menu are presented various information cards in the style of Google Now, with various shortcuts to the most frequently used features adjusted by the user.

Bixby continues, however, not to speak Portuguese which may continue to be an obstacle for some users. However, its evolution in command interpretation is notorious.

At the level of functionalities there is also the side applications screen, also already common, that takes advantage of the edge screen.

Is it worth talking about in performance?

I will start by presenting the benchmark results. These tests do not always correspond to the real capacity of smartphones, but it serves anyway as a means of comparison.

  • AnTuTu (v.7.0.6): 332187
  • GeekBench 4:
    • Single Core: 4462
    • Multi Core: 10395

As for performance, honestly, there is nothing to point to. Everything works within the expected. Before a smarpthone of 1000 €, with one of the best SoC on the market, with 8 GB of RAM and a powerful GPU, nothing more can be expected that the best and that's what we have.

All the tasks, from the most ordinary to the most demanding, were all carried out impeccably.

The power of 5 cameras in photography and video

As far as cameras are concerned, Samsung has continued to improve its offer. The brand was already one of the best in this parameter and now reinforces its position.

In terms of specifications, there are three chambers in the back: one 12MP telephoto lens which allows shooting with optical zoom 2 times; an wide angle, which can be seen as the principal, also of 12 MP, but with an aperture that varies according to the light conditions; and, finally, a third chamber, of 16 MP Ultra Wide Angle which captures a larger area.

In turn, the front camera is composed of two sensors, one of 10 MP, one sensor dedicated to common selfies, and another of 8 MP. The latter serves both to create depth effect, as for selfies where more people fit, or more landscape.

It should be noted that this camera already records the 4K, a feature still rare in the world of smartphones, but great for creators, for whom the smartphone is a working tool.

The Camera app

To respond to the characteristics of the new cameras there is a renewed app, with more functionalities. Next to the shutter comes the various capture modes and the option to switch between lenses, with the icons explain exactly the function of each one of them. With the ultra-wide choice, pay attention to the position of the fingers so they do not appear in the photos.

With Super Slow mode it is possible to record at 960 fps in HD and for this mode even a lot of natural light is needed. Artificial light can give out any slowmotion (see in the analysis video).

Other present modes include Live Focus, Pro, Panorama, Food, Slow Motion, and Quick Motion. Recently, Samsung added Instagram mode. When capturing a photo this is soon forwarded to the edition of Instagram Stories.

I'm not a fan of automatic modes with artificial intelligence, but the truth is that they are getting better and the adjustments made with the S10 plus are good. In night mode (AI), I do not particularly like the staring effect it gives the lights. But it's still interesting. Here are some examples.

Evidently many of the examples were captured with the three lenses in the same plane, and in different environments.

The details are incredible in any of them, however, the telephoto camera is not recommended for photographs in darker environments.

Selfies are also to be praised. In fact, this front camera leaves many main cameras ashamed.

With regard to video, the front camera was the most surprising, with excellent stabilization and rapid adaptation to different variations of light, ideal for those who want to record out of doors. Examples of video with both modules can be seen in the initial video.

More details and examples can be seen in an article dedicated exclusively to their cameras compared to the Huawei Mate 20 Pro.

Autonomy and Wireless PowerShare

The Samsung Galaxy S10 + comes equipped with a smart battery of 4100 mAh. What does “smart battery” mean? Basically, features are tailored so that the battery is not being consumed by background applications that have not been in use for a long time.

But, in addition to being smart, it still comes with the new “Wireless PowerShare“. That is, it allows you to inductively load other equipment that supports wireless charging technology.

About Wirless PowerShare, it's basically the same functionality that Huawei had already presented with its Mate 20 Pro. Still it's good to see that brands are betting on this trend. In fact, I have never, in any situation, had to use it, but it is still positive to exist, bringing more value to this S10 +.

At the point of autonomy, the S10 Plus is not surprising. The screen was practically always used in FullHD +, below the maximum available, which ababa for being more economic. In the stand-alone test, through the PC mark app, it took almost 10 hours of use. But briefly, it gives a day of use.

Compared with the Mate 20 Pro, my personal smartphone, with the same type of use I get to the end of a day with almost 30% battery and with the S10 +, this no longer happens. In this case, most days ended up with 15%. It must be said that Huawei is much more restrictive in the management of consumption than Samsung, which sometimes even harms the user experience.

Also in terms of fast loading, nothing surprising. It takes more than half an hour to load in its entirety (105 minutes) in half an hour, carries around 40%.

It's not bad. But not surprising.

It is worth pointing out the price of the Samsung Galaxy S10 +. This top-of-the-range product is available in the € 1029.99 (128 GB). The 512 GB models are available can € 1279.99 and the 1 TB, available by $ 1639.99. Yes, they are very expensive … And how far can this go … Given the 128 GB model, you can even consider a fair price compared to what the competition offers.

We know there are brands as capable as Samsung, but we also have to give value to the details that other brands still have.

On the question of performance, of the whole operation of S10 +, there is nothing negative to point out. The new interface is very well optimized and in the testing period everything responded within what the demands of a top of the range.

O screen has superb quality, not surprising, considering the mark that I have in hand … but we can not fail to comment on the cameras forced into the screen. The solution was not good, Samsung.

The fingerprint sensor, ultrasonic, works faultlessly, is super secure and is very well positioned … in turn, which is very poorly positioned is the power button. The rest of the structure deserves a positive note.

Autonomy is not surprising, but it also does not disappoint, and the charging function of other wireless smartphones is good, but I've never needed it … and it's not a 15-day thing. I've had this technology for 3 months on Mate 20 Pro and have never used it except for testing.

In the field of photography and video, as in performance, there is nothing to point to negative.

Picking up the initial question: will this be the best Samsung ever? The answer in terms of specifications is obvious … However, I consider that this is not a disruptive model, as was the Galaxy S8 or the mythical SIII.

Pplware thanks Samsung for providing the Galaxy S10 + for review.
