Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is an open-world action role-playing game developed by CyberConnect2 and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Located in areas of semi-open world of individual centers with RPG elements, the game freely follows the plot of the Dragon Ball Z anime series with the player assuming the role of protagonist Goku. Other characters such as Piccolo, Vegeta, Gohan (youth, teenagers, adults), Future Trunks, Vegito and Gotenks have been announced as playable characters.

The game is not considered an open world with a massive sandbox, but is divided into individual centers that will be locked until they reach a certain point in history, only then will these areas be unlocked for exploration. These individual centers are not small and the opening of these areas provides one more reason to have the flight as a travel mode, with an impressive verticality and area. Some areas are full of life and cities, while others are more arid and lifeless.

Flying will be a great aspect of the game and the main way to travel to the objectives and other parts of the map unless you prefer to run at super speeds, the nimbus cloud will also be a mode of transport and for the final edition the Tao Pai Pai Pilar will be available.

During the general game and the flight, the game is handled like a typical third-person game, when fighting the perspective changes to a fighting game over the shoulder. Fighting is a mix between typical punches, kicks, dodging and ki-blasts with special movements and combos involved.

Outside of combat, you are free to explore the different places, collect minerals with explosions of ki and fish. The emphasis on the progression of role-playing games distinguishes this game from the typical fighting games, Goku will not start with his most powerful moves with them only unlocked through the skill tree and progression throughout history. There are five different ways to turn on; eating, fighting, finding ki orbs and creating communities. Linking characters with community leaders of different types can maximize experience gain. The orbs found in the world through exploration are the main currency to progress in the skill tree. Meals are important, as the search for fruit or the preparation of dishes in a chef can permanently increase statistics. When fighting in battles, you will gain experience points, choose your battles and make sure your character is at the right level before participating.
