Did you see how the Netflix Bird Box was different from the book? No film adaptation is exactly like the book – and it's fun to see the Bird Box book versus the differences from the movie Bird Box – but the movie Sandra Bullock Netflix has changed some important details from the original written source. Some things are quite small, like moving the location from Detroit to Northern California – which really does not impact anything, but there are other changes that really show the differences between the Bird Box book and the versions of the Bird Box movie that you want that you check both out.
In the book Bird Box, the story is much slower – take months for the epidemic to hit the US. In the movie, to speed things up, creatures appear in America almost immediately. Also to make the story move, Malorie's sister, Jessica, dies very early. In the Bird Box book, Malorie's sister survives much longer. Also in the book, the name of Malorie's sister is Shannon. Shannon finds her end in her house with Malorie when she is exposed to an open window. This is another significant change – in the book, Malorie does not join the group until months after the outbreak; in the movie she joins immediately.
John Malkovich's Douglas is not in the Bird Box book. He's a kind of character made up of few people – but he's not the only change. Tom, played by Trevante Rhodes, is a tall, blue-eyed man who is overturned by Gary in the book. Tom and Malorie form a family for boy and girl – he gave a much deeper character arc in the film.
